A farmer near les Vignolles, in the Cévennes, in the Gard department in the south of France. My wife and I were staying with friends, and some of their friends, in the Cévennes, six adults and 2 boys of about 10. The friends and their son were heading back home the next day, so we all went out to dinner. But because there was no market that day, the only way the travelers could stock up on pélardon, the local goat cheese, would be to stop off at the cheese-maker’s farm, which was sort of on the way to the restaurant. So we piled into a van and went, over two-lane winding mountain roads, to a one-lane dirt road, through two switchbacks, through someone’s farm, to the cheese-maker’s farm. We shopped, and I spent some time chatting up and photographing the family, including the cheese-maker’s husband. (I have another photo of him giving me a wary look.) Then back through the switchbacks to the 2-lane road and on to dinner. The diversion took over an hour. And no one, not even the boys, thought there was anything unusual about it.
