I've always been attracted to music and musicians—the first serious photos I ever took were of musicians. The piano lessons I took as a kid did not stick. At least the piano did not stick—I did learn, and still mostly remember, how to read music, and still play the guitar a bit. But the ability of musicians to take a thing, an instrument, and to make people pay attention, make them feel good, make them laugh, make them cry—that borders on magic. Hence this gallery of musical magicians.
This gallery includes some rare candid photos of Frank Zappa of The Mothers of Invention backstage prior to a February 1968 performance at the Durfee Theater in Fall River, Massachusetts. I took these when backstage access did not require a wristband, all-access pass, or much more than an assertion that you were taking photos. The theater is long gone, and sadly Zappa, too.
